Internet marketing isn’t all fun and games. In addition to the hard work and time you put into your marketing strategies, you also have to find the time and effort to track and monitor results from each of your internet marketing methods. If you do not keep up with tracking and monitoring your website and marketing activities you cannot begin to know what is working and what is just a waste of your time and money.
There are many tools for webmasters or website owners that can be used to monitor the effectiveness and results of any given internet marketing method or strategy. Most of these tools are available in free and paid versions. The paid versions will give you more detailed information on a more frequent and/or automated basis. The free versions are largely web based and require constant capcha entries as well as session time outs, but work well if you are not monitoring several methods or keywords.
The first tool that is an absolute must is a page rank tool. This should tell you what page rank you are at, and where your competitors are based on the url’s you provide the tool. Do not confuse page rank with search engine position. Page rank helps to determine search engine position, but you can easily share a page rank with a competitor.
The second tool you need is a search engine positioning tool. This tool will tell you what position you are in on the search results for Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Just about every other search engine takes their cue from one of these three main search engines, so focus all of your internet marketing efforts on these three gurus. The tool you are looking for will allow you to see your position as well as the position of one or more of your competitors based on the keyword searched. Most often the free tools will not show results if you are not found in the first 50 positions.
Your website hosting service should also provide some basic tools to help you monitor your website traffic and where it is coming from. If not, you can get the same or more detailed information from Google Analytics, which is a free web based tool. Analytics allows you to see what keywords where searched for when people visited your site, where they searched for your site, and/or what site linked to your site. Basically, it tells you everything you need to know about how your visitor arrived and what they did while they were there.
This monitoring of your internet marketing activities will assist you in many ways. If you are not sure about the impact of your sponsored advertising you can use Analytics to ensure that you are getting viable traffic from those ads. If you are not, you might change your strategy or dismiss that marketing method entirely. If you aren’t sure about article marketing, you can run a few articles and monitor over a month’s time how many visitors your articles bring to you.
