A website is the first step in becoming an affiliate marketer. In fact, any person who is looking to have an online business, must have a website, this is the ultimate requirement. The website should be professional, simple, and informative. It does not have be graphic heavy or intensive, but it should display the utmost in professionalism.

To get started with your own website there are three steps that you have to take first. The first thing you have to do is to choose and buy your own domain name. The second step is to acquire hosting services. Finally, you have to design and upload your own website.

Preferably, before you decided to start a website you did some keyword research. It is generally a good idea to choose a domain name that uses your primary keyword or keyword phrase. If nothing else, choose a domain name that works well with your company and what you have to offer.

Choosing a hosting provider is relatively easy as well. There are many available across the web. GoDaddy is one of the most popular and reliable of the hosting providers available on the internet. You want to make sure that you have a good uptime percentage and that your files are safe in their storage.

Designing A Website

You have a few choices when it comes to getting a design for your website. Your first choice is to hire your own web designer. They talk with you, figure out what you are looking for, and design the website per your preferences, specifications, and instructions. If this is the route you chose, make sure that you tell them you want a website that is clean and professional.

You can find great designers at freelance sites such as ODesk or RentACoder. You can create something of an advertisement of your needs within these sites and other web designers will start to bid. After receiving your bids, you should look through every designer that has shown interest, look at their portfolio, how much are they bidding and charging. After doing this, choose the one that most appeals to you and has what you are looking for.

Your second choice will be to choose a free template from the many available on the internet. This is ideal for those who are not willing to pay someone to do their design work. All you will have to do is download the template from your choices website, replace the content with your own, and then make it live on your hosting provider by uploading.

Your third choice is to use what is called a site builder. Your hosting provider may offer a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) site builder or you could opt for software programs such as FrontPage or Dreamweaver.

What Does Every Good Website Need?

A good website must:

- Be Professional – You should use professional colors, most any color can be professional if used right and should be neat, clean, and easy to understand.
- Be Simple – Avoid a graphic heavy website, flashy banners, and a multitude of animation, this can be distracting. Keep it simple, easy to use, and navigational.
- Contain a Search Function – You want to make sure that your visitors can find what they need without a lot of clicks. Visitors love searching because it allows them to easily go where they need and get what they want in terms of information and products.
- Have the Ability to Capture Information to build your Mailing list – on of the most important elements of building a successful affiliate marketing business is building your own mailing list. Having a box or method of capture on your website is crucial to success.

You know that a website is the first step in creating your affiliate marketing business, make sure that it is easy to use, informative, professional, and can be easily navigated at the same time.

Your nonverbal can actually destroy or produce the results you want, such as inspiring employees to do better work, calming angry customers, creating fans in the marketplace and closing sales.”

And according to a new CareerBuilder survey, your body language can also hurt your chances of landing a job … especially a lack of eye contact.

In the survey of more than 2,500 hiring managers, 67 percent said that failure to make eye contact would make them less likely to hire a job candidate. Other nonverbals that hiring managers cited as negative included these seven things:

Lack of smile – 38 percent

Fidgeting too much – 33 percent

Bad posture – 33 percent

Handshake that is too weak – 26 percent

Crossing arms over their chest – 21 percent

Playing with their hair or touching their face – 21 percent

Using too many hand gestures – 9 percent

“In a highly competitive job market, job seekers need to set themselves apart in the interview stage,” said Rosemary Haefner, vice president of human resources for CareerBuilder. “All that pressure, though, may have some job seekers making body language mistakes that don’t convey a confident message. To avoid these faux pas, and ensure you’re remembered for the right reasons, try practicing ahead of time in front of a mirror or family and friends.”

Haefner offers the following tips to avoid body language missteps during an interview:

Keep calm. To make the best impression and avoid nervous body language, take measures to stay as calm as possible before the interview. Leave the house with plenty of time to get to the interview, avoid caffeine if possible and take deep, calming breaths.

Practice makes perfect. The old adage proves true in this case, as you’ll feel more comfortable the more you prepare for the interview, and in turn, it will help decrease your anxiety. Rehearse ahead of time with friends or family, do your homework on the company and be prepared for common interview questions.

See for yourself. Viewing yourself while speaking can help you notice what body language mistakes you might be making without realizing. Look in a mirror while practicing interview responses or videotape yourself to figure out your typical physical movements, and whether or not you need to change them.

Saylor, who is a certified group dynamics and behavioral coach, says it is possible to change your behavior and be conscious of what messages you’re sending with your own body. Her book gives the reader tips on overcoming many communication roadblocks including how to project confidence, how to look intelligent, how to eliminate verbal pauses, and how to use your posture to show confidence.

The discovery of niche keywords is an effective no-cost way to uncover marketing potential. Many online businesses simply rely on keywords or phrases they think best describe their product or service. By conducting a search to learn what niche keywords might bring visitors to your site you are likely to increase the number of unique visits to your site. There are several online tools to help you uncover niche keywords. This information is valuable for Meta title information as well as knowledge based articles and product descriptions.

Color schemes may also have some bearing on the acceptability of your site. The harmony of colors may go a long way in maximizing the time spent on your website. A website like easyrbg (dot) com can assist you in finding colors that work together. The use of this tool is free.

Consumers do not have patience for a site with broken links and missing pages. The use of a free product like netmechanic (dot)com will allow you to check links, html as well as spelling mistakes that may exist on your website. You can effectively uncover problems with your website before an irate visitor points it out.

There are other free-to-use software programs to help with learning html codes, fixing broken html codes, placing a search engine on your website as well as other tools that have the ability to help you maintain and market your website.

The world of web marketing is a blend of tried and true methods like long-term keyword strategies, advertising and exemplary web site maintenance and updates. The addition of knowledge-based articles that are subjected to Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques can also provide a significant boost to your marketing efforts.

Internet marketing is a bit like going into your favorite department store and looking at shoes. You can see that every box has a shoe, but each box contains something unique. Each shoebox contains a different size, style or color of shoe. In marketing, every site has similarities, but there are certain strategies that may work better for one ecommerce site than another.

For instance, some websites use business blogging extensively while others may not us blogging at all in their Internet marketing strategies. Some websites may rely heavily on Meta title information while others may rely on manual site submission strategies. It is true I may have some marketing preferences that just make sense to me, but as long as you keep working at ways to promote your website you improve the odds that your online business will succeed.

Having a product or services, a kind of website and lots of enthusiasm is simply not enough to ensure that your small business succeeds. There are certain necessary basic marketing mechanisms you need to put in place to ensure that your business is around for a long time.

A simple template based website might be sufficient but you should ensure that it does the job perfectly. This means someone other than you will have to test it to see that all the links work and that navigation is logical and easy to follow. If you have a website where customers can make purchases ensure that the shopping cart feature is functional and user friendly. You should also have some kind of search engine optimization conducted to ensure your website is easily found.

Next you are going to need brochures and price lists. Included in these should be all the basic information connected with your business and your product and service pricing. Your website should encompass everything included here. These basic tools are essential to make selling your goods and services easier. It is shocking how few businesses have insufficient basic information to hand. Dont fall into this trap. If your goods and services are of a technical nature, ensure that you have specification or data sheets available. Remember: people like to do business with people that put their prices in writing.

You need to announce to the world that you are in business that your new products and services meet their needs and are everything they have been waiting for. Sending a press release to the media is an excellent way to do this. Dont feel inferior your business is newsworthy. Have a press release professionally written and distributed. If using a professional press release writer eats up your entire budget, consider distributing the release through an online service such as www.PRWeb.com and others.

If you are selling a product in the consumer market then you should make the effort to develop a striking point of sale POS presence. Go and find examples in your supermarket or in stores similar to where you product would be sold and develop these merchandising styles. These might include corrugated floor or end cap merchandisers, tags or wobblers. Remember to obtain the merchandising guidelines and policies from the stores involved in marketing your product.

Advertising of some kind should form part of your marketing mix. This need not be expensive. In fact, it is unusual for newly established small businesses to advertise in the prime media print, TV and radio. Even a simple online banner ad, a PPC campaign or an email campaign might be effective. Look at distributing business cards, flyers and leaflets. Work out a nice advertising mix that will address your target audience within your budget. Do not look at advertising your business as a luxury but rather as an investment that will pay handsome dividends over time.

Once your marketing campaign is operating, dont omit to test and monitor results via your website, public relations, point of sale and advertising efforts. Then you will be able to work out your return on investment. You will get an idea of how you need to alter and refine your campaign, this time around and the next year.

If you do not see yourself having the time, skills or patience for setting up your basic marketing plan then consider getting a marketing consultant or agency involved to help you. Some such agencies and individual marketing consultants offer full spectrum marketing services that can handle all of the above and more. A huge advantage of dealing through an agency is that it eliminates having to research and find reliable suppliers. Instead you work with one contact who takes responsibility for it all.

The he-said-she-said-I-heard-don’t-tell-anybody rumor mill thrives in any workplace. You can be a registered nurse, an attorney, a foreman or a teacher, and you come across information that no one else knows. Is it news? Is it gossip?

The textbook correct way to handle this information is to keep it to yourself. If what you found out about is that a partner at the firm is pregnant or that Greg has a crush on Janine, then, yes. You’d be hard pressed to categorize spreading that information around as anything other than gossiping.

However, what happens if you come across information that involves the company or your colleagues? An impending merger? Restructuring? These are major events that affect how your workplace functions. As juicy as this news is, the company will address it sooner or later, and you probably don’t have all the behind-the-scenes details that went on.

However, what do you do if you find out that a colleague is going to be laid off or fired? You might not have all the details in this situation, but you know that someone is about to lose his or her job. Would you ever take it upon yourself to break the news to the affected party? Before you decide what to do, let’s look at both sides of the situation.

Why you might want to say something

The personal connection
Being laid off or fired is a devastating moment for most workers. The ability to pay the bills and survive comes from getting a paycheck. You can view telling the person, especially if he or she is a close friend, your way of making the news less code and sterile. For a boss, the decision to downsize might be purely business; for a co-worker, it’s personal.

The shock value
If you’ve ever been fired or seen someone shortly after receiving the news, the shock is visible. A stunned expression tells you the person is still trying to process it. Tipping him or her off gives time to get used to the idea before the boss breaks the news. That way, the fired party is in a state of mind to ask the right questions and understand what is going on.

Planning time
Taking the previous two points into account, you can understand why adequate planning time is good before having to leave a job. Getting personal issues in order (belongings, incomplete projects, benefits, insurance) takes some preparation. If the soon-to-be-fired employee is about to buy a car or book a vacation, finding out could save them some much-needed cash.

Why you might want to keep your mouth closed

Your information could be wrong
Let’s face it: Until the boss actually says, “We have to let you go,” nothing is official. Between the time you hear the news and the time you tell the person, the situation could have changed. Now you’re left looking like a liar and the person goes to work each day wondering if that will be the last day in the office.

You don’t know how the person will react
Companies usually have a set of guidelines in place for terminating an employee. They might have HR deliver the news. They might have HR or security present in case the person reacts negatively. You don’t know how a person will take the news and you’re not equipped to handle the situation. The person could even overreact and storm into the boss’ office, quitting before she can be fired. That outcome could mean the company isn’t required to pay a severance package or honor any of the other perks that would be necessary with a layoff.

You don’t know the whole story
Although you want to believe the best about your co-workers, maybe he or she is getting let go because of poor performance, bad reviews or other behind-the-scenes matters that you’re not privy to. Or maybe they’re being let go for financial reasons, and it’s either you or him. If word gets out that you gossiped, then the boss might want to let you go instead or (or in addition to) the other person .

You’re not the boss
Ultimately, you’re not the person tasked with breaking the news. Maybe your colleague won’t find it easier to hear the news from your mouth. Perhaps it will be humiliating that a co-worker is the first to know about this bad news. You could be seen by your colleague as overstepping your boundaries and not as someone doing a favor.

You could be putting yourself at risk
If your company has a policy about handling confidential information or violating a worker’s rights – and you can safely assume almost every company does have these policies – you could be in trouble. Are you prepared to lose your job and have to tell future employers that you were fired for violating a privacy policy? It could have serious effects on your career.

The case against telling is longer than the case for letting your colleague in on the secret. The repercussions for your career are certainly greater if you do tell. However, we are talking about people you work with every day. You might consider them friends. You know what a layoff does to a person’s life. It affects more than just the 40 hours they’re on the clock each week.

So, tell us if you would ever consider telling someone that you knew a layoff or firing was coming. Do you think it’s ever justified or should you always mind your own business? Would you want a co-worker to tell you if you were on the receiving end of the pink slip?

Business cards, it seems, are neglected, abused, given little if any thought when designed, and are grossly misunderstood when it comes to their real intended use.

A business card, as it turns out, is nothing more than an abbreviated ad and a way for people (preferably those that want to spend money with you) to contact you.

However, what approximately 99% of everyone who has a business card misses is this: the ADVERTISEMENT part! Few people take advantage of the business and use it to generate business.

I will try to walk you through the do’s and don’ts of creating a business card.

Let’s start with the headline. Yes, your business card should have a headline. How else is someone going to know whether or not they should keep the card or even call you?

You have to give people a compelling reason WHY they should take action. A headline’s job is to get attention. Then, get the reader to read on… to learn more.

Next, don’t make the important information so small that it’s impossible to read without one of those old biology class microscopes. Fill up the card. White space has never enticed anyone to do anything. In other words, white space in any ad, or on any business card, is space that costs you money, but fails to generate any revenue.

If you have a website, include it in your contact information. However, by adding this to your card, you are implying that this is a valid way to get what you have to offer. Make sure that your website is always functional and up-to-date. If your prices change, be sure to update this information on your website. Equally important is the services that you provide. Make sure that your website informs people about what you can do. And, if your abilities change (grow), make sure your website reflects those changes.

Pairing with the website, a personal email address is also a great addition. A lot of people feel like they can get more information through email, and it seems less threatening. However, I must reiterate the "personal" part of this. Don’t put info@yourcompany. This makes people feel like their email will probably go off to some outsourced respondent in India. No, put YOUR email address – YOU@yourcompany.

Next important tip: Use both sides! Paper is expensive; ink is cheap. We’re going back to the white space-factor. For many potential customers, that 2.5X3" piece of cardstock is the only thing they might see of yours. Make it count.

AND, include an guarantee or an offer… Or, both! Give them an additional reason to keep your card and take action.

Lastly, provide a small, simple map. This is especially important if you work with a lot of people that are new to your area. Try to give them a general sense of where they can find you.

So, let’s re-cap.

1. Headline – WHY should I even keep this thing?
2. Easily read your contact information.
3. Website and email included (but, only if this is a true resource you can offer).
4. Use both sides of the business card.
5. Offer something to entice them to want to work with you.
6. Map.

If you already have a business card, rethink your design and the use of your card. Make sure that it serves as, not only a resource for your contact information, but also as an advertisement.

If you have not yet put your business card together, or if someone else is creating your card for you, be sure to evaluate all of these key pieces that every professional’s business card should include. Make it work for you.
